Rita Levi-Montalcini

Rita Levi-Montalcini (Turin, 22 April 1909 – Rome, 30 December 2012) was an Italian neurologist.

In the 1950s, her research discovered and illustrated the nerve fibre growth factor NGF (in this case the axonal structure), and for this discovery she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1986. She also won other prizes and was the first woman to be admitted to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. On 1 August 2001, she was appointed life senator by the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi ‘for having illustrated the country with high merits in the scientific and social field.
